a somewhat unexpected morning gratitude list

the sounds of my family waking up
the Amaryllis blooming fiercely
the Christmas decorations bought by my mother
the swimsuit drying on a chair waiting for today’s cold swim
the Ficus I grew from a tiny baby to a proud plant
the window that lets the light in
the fingers writing these words
the smoke coming from the chimney across the street
instead of the smoke from the neighborhood house
that burned down last night
